David Hsu spent his early years on construction sites, long before Lean Co. existed — watching contractors hand over buildings that were, on paper, finished. Walls painted. Floors polished. Keys handed over. And yet, standing inside them, something was always missing.
It wasn't until the electricians wired the first pendant and switched it on that he saw it happen: a bare, echoing room would soften. Shadows would settle into the corners. People walking through would slow down, look up, and say something like — this could be home.
He thought of his own family — that small, ordinary moment of walking in the door after dark and finding the lamps already lit. Not a grand feeling. A quiet one. He wanted to build that feeling into other people's homes, on purpose, at scale.
That's why he left construction to design lighting instead. Not lamps — instruments for making a space feel inhabited before a single piece of furniture arrives. Lean Co. was built on that one conviction: light, done right, isn't decoration. It's the difference between a house and a home.
